Frequently Asked Questions

What file formats does Folio support?
Folio supports EPUB and PDF files. You can import them from your device using the Files app, email, or any app that supports file sharing.
Is Folio Plus a subscription?
No. Folio Plus is a one-time purchase of $4.99. You pay once and get lifetime access to all premium features, including any future updates. No recurring charges, ever.
What do I get for free?
The free version lets you import and read unlimited books, create highlights with 3 colors, review up to 3 highlights per day, and download up to 2 free books from the catalog.
Where is my data stored?
All your data — books, highlights, notes, and reading stats — is stored locally on your device. We never upload your data to any server. Your reading life is 100% private.
What is the Daily Review feature?
Daily Review uses spaced repetition (the same science behind flashcard apps) to resurface your highlights at optimal intervals. Ollie shows you cards each day so you remember the passages that matter most to you.
Can I export my highlights?
Yes! With Folio Plus, you can export your highlights to Markdown, CSV, or Notion-compatible format. The export file is generated on your device and shared using iOS's standard share sheet.
Where do the free books come from?
Free books are sourced from Project Gutenberg, a library of over 70,000 public domain books. These are classic works whose copyright has expired, available legally and freely.
Does Folio work on iPad?
Yes! Folio is fully optimized for iPad with a sidebar navigation, larger book cards, and two-column layouts that take advantage of the bigger screen.
How do I delete my data?
You can delete individual books, highlights, or notes within the app. To remove all data, simply delete the Folio app from your device. Since we don't store anything on servers, that's all it takes.
